Building Connections with Patients and Each Other

I was born and raised in Philadelphia, and grew up right around the corner from Temple University Hospital. I feel like I’ve come full circle now that I work at Temple University Hospital-Episcopal Campus.

When I was 18 years old, I started out by working in the OR at TUH. Then, I decided to go to nursing school at Northeastern and worked there. I was also a nurse at Temple University Hospital-Jeanes Campus for several years in the emergency room. I’ve been back at the Temple University Hospital emergency room at its Episcopal Campus since June.

The Temple network is like family. You make friends for life — I’m still in contact with co-workers from Jeanes Campus, and I last worked there in 2013. There’s a connection with people you know will have your back, and that teamwork is so rewarding. Teamwork is important to me — I’m former military!

The team at Episcopal Campus is incredible. From the nurses, nursing education staff, assistant nurse manager and nurse manager, to the patient care assistants (PCAs) and security — just everyone. It’s all hands on deck. The emergency room is very fast-paced and yes, we may work with a tough population, but you build a connection with patients and with each other.

I spent 18 years as a nurse at Hahnemann. I came to Temple in June 2020 when Hahnemann closed. I chose Temple because of the diversity and opportunity for growth. Temple feels like a family and I am glad I came.

Temple has a population of nurses, doctors and support staff in all departments, which represent the community they serve. At other places I have worked, this was not the case.

Returning to Temple for Advancement Opportunities

I’ve been back at Temple since June. I did travel nursing for about 2 years and worked at Temple 5 years ago as a staff nurse. I made the decision to return because the managerial position opened up, and I already knew a lot of the staff from my time here before and had a good rapport with them. I’m also originally from PA!
